Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the necessary knowledge to read and interpret the instruments of planning through a multidisciplinary approach which considers, besides the planning aspect, the regulative and historical-artistic one.

Course contents

The course addresses the history of city planning in Europe in the XIX and XX century. An introductory part will be dedicated to documentary sources and to the methods used in the history of city planning, with the aim of illustrating the research instruments in this field. The transformations of the urban space are presented in the socio-political and cultural context in which they emerge and are analyzed through the use of critical literature, to which the course dedicates particular attention.

The considered, two centuries, and the vast geographical area of Europe require a selection of topics. The main topics will be: the crisis of XIX century city due to a rapid and uncontrolled urban growth. The alternative proposals based on zoning and decentralization, emerging in the late XIX and the early XX century: the linear city, the garden city, the industrial city: The garden movement and the garden suburbs. Otto Wagner's compact city model and metropolitan city idea (1911). Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1901-1905 and 1914-1917) plan for South Amsterdam. Tthe passage from a city scale to a territorial scale and the regional plans between the two World Wars. The competition for the territorial plan of Paris (1919) and le Plan Directeur of Paris region, compiled by Henry Prost (1932). The city of the Modern Movement. Le Corbusier's city planning and Ludwig Hilberseimer's vertical metropolis (1925). Weissenhof's exhibition in Stuttgart (1927). The CIAMS (Congrés International d'Architecture Moderne, 1928-1933). Cornelius van Eesteren's plan for Amsterdam (1933-39). The programme for a functional city as stated in Athens Charter (1933-42). The planning of totalitarian regimes: Italy, Germany, Soviet union. The plan for the new towns in England (1946-70) and for the villes nouvelles in France (1963-1980). The post-war period in Italy between the Organic Movement and Fanfani's housing plan (1949-1963). Le Courbusier's unité d'habitionin Marseille (1945-52). The Italian version of macrostructures, the residential complex “lo steccone” in Bologna's Barca district (1968-70) and the Corviale in Rome (1973-81). Globalization and urban space.

A further study will be addressed to the issue  of contemporary city planning with particular attention to the current crisis and the process of urban regeneration in Europe. The analysis will proceed through the study of some cases as London, Berlin, Barcelona, Bratislava and Genoa.

Teaching methods

Frontal classes with a theoretical approach and presentation of iconographical material, consisting of plans, master plans, drawings of architectural structures and photographs. Guided tours are planned to exhibitions and some urban complexes

Assessment methods

The exam consists in an oral interview. It aimed to verify: 
the basics of the history of urban planning, as outlined in the programme;

the knowledge of the main trends and the main players in the history of urban planning;

the ability to read and interpret documents, images, plans;

critical skills to explain and interpret the different theoretical approaches to history of urban planning and the practical solutions suggested;

the ability to identify subjects and useful indications to present the topics in an appropriate way;

the ability to indicate the location of the main city-planning interventions with the help of maps and blueprints;

the ability to find one's way around the history of European Urban Studies of the XIX and XX centuries;

the ability to express oneself in an appropriate way.

Teaching tools

Presentation of digital images and slides of blueprints, cartographical surveys, city planning schemes, photographs, drawings of architectural structures and building complexes.
