- Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)
Learning outcomes
At the end of the Course the student is able to recognize under the microscopic examination the morphological changes of cells and tissues induced by diseases and host defences. He/she is able to describe and interpret the pathological picture of the microscopic specimen, tracing it back to the specific etiopathogenetic mechanism. He/she understands the limits and the diagnostic potential of the histopathology analysis.
Course contents
General histopathology of:Benign and malignant epithelial cancers. Mesenchymal tumors. Metastasis. Intracellular and extracellular accumulations. Necrosis and infarction. Types of acute inflammation: serous, fibrinous, purulent, necrotic, hemorrhagic. Chronic inflammations: non-specific and granulomatous. Granulation tissue, sclerosis, cirrhosis. Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis. Thrombosis.

Teaching methods
Laboratories are addressed to small groups of students guided by the Teacher and consist of observations under microscopeof histopathologic specimens.Laboratories will be preceded by introductive presentations of topics and specimens.
Assessment methods
Theevaluation isa part of the final examination of the Integrated Course of Pathology and Physiopathology and it consists of microscopic observations of histopathology specimens, with their description, recognition and discussion.
Teaching tools
The histopathology laboratory has 48 microscopes and a microscope-connected projector.
An educational platform, edited by Prof. Maria Giulia Battelli,
