Learning outcomes

Through the analysis of a specific theme regarding the architecture and the late antique and byzantine townplanning in relation to the society and the culture of that period, at the end of the course the students have got the methods and the contents of the discipline, in order to set up correctly a critical research. They are able to use different sources (archaeological, literary, epigraphic) and an adequate scientific bibliography.

Course contents

Program. The course deals with the analysis of the urbanism and the architecture of the Dodecanese between the IVth and the VIIth century through the archaeological, architectural and artistic documentation. Some general themes will be also examined in connection to the social and religious models.

Contents:Urbanism and architecture in the Dodecanese islands between the IVth and the VIIth century. Contexts and productions. The artistic culture. The reference models. Problems of method and interpretative tools; analysis of the archaeological, architectural and artistic documentation; widening of a some specific subjects.

Dopo il corso, grazie ad un contributo della Facoltà di Lettere, sarà svolto un viaggio di studio a Rodi, Kos e Patmos destinato agli studenti delle lauree triennale e specialistica.

Teaching methods

Lessons in class with ppt presentation. A visit of Ravenna will be organized, as well as a study's journey to Rhodes, Kos and Patmos.
