Course contents
Into Italian (Prof. Danio Maldussi)
This course aims at training students to deal confidently with texts of several different types from French into Italian and focus on some of the most important notions in translation such as equivalence and functional approaches. Also, the course aims at increasing the students' awareness of the resources available on the web, while assessing the credibility of the author and the reliability of the materials found on the web. In order to develop translational competence and favour skills and vocabulary upgrading, the lessons will include propedeutic exercises to translation such as reformulation, explication de texte and extraction de notions clés. The students will practice on texts (traduction commentée and traduction à vue) that will focus mainly on the most important aspects of French and World actuality, such as politics, economy, environment and culture, just to name a few, taken from Le Nouvel Observateur, Les Echos, Le Courrier International and La Croix. Translations will then be analysed and discussed as a whole class activity.
These exercises aims to activate linguistic competence (synonyms and antonyms). This type of exercise is intended to enhance the students' linguistic resources as well as to provide them with useful strategies for translating.
Into French (Prof. Yannick Hamon)
The learning goals are the same as those of the second year students with an increasing difficulty of the source texts :
Methodological level :
Being conscious of beliefs, representations about both the translating process and French as target language; being conscious of learning strategies and specific translation strategies
Ability to construct an efficient methodology
Ability to spot linguistic and cultural problems on the source text
Understanding ability linked with the context of the communication act in the source text
Ability to use online resources for linguistic or encyclopedic purposes (searching tools, dictionaries, online encyclopedias, glossaries, comments in writing software tools, translators forums)
Knowledge and application of formal paging rules
Cooperate with other students
Linguistic level :
Ability to focus on errors due to interferences from italian to french
Strengthen writing competences
Strengthen syntactic and lexical knowledge and use in context in relation to the frequent problems
Ability to edit the translated product
Educational level
Ability of being open to a knew knowledge (source and target cultures)
Being conscious as a future translator or mediator of the ethical of the ethical responsibility

Teaching methods
Into Italian (Danio Maldussi)
Lessons combine different didactic strategies which include sight
translation and individual translations carried out as homework.
Research of documentation for translational purposes will also be
focused upon.
Into French (Yannick Hamon)
By using the online italian press and by choosing 3 or 4 global themes about current issues, the teacher will stimulate the reflexion to improve the student's translation.
The first 2 lessons will be aimed at a general diagnostic and revisions through :
On line questionaries on translation strategy skills
Open discussion about beliefs, representations, experiences in relation to translation
Sight translation of short texts
Collaborative building of a translation toolbox
Collaborative building of an online theoretical documentation (links and brief description of the content)
The other 16 lessons will be aimed at :
Translation and critical comment of the translations done by 2 students, revised and edited by 2 other students. These translations will be uploaded on moodle.
Sight translations or collaborative translations of short texts
Updates on lexical or redactional concerns spotted on previous translations
The last 2 lessons will be aimed at :
A pre test assessment
Face to face collaborative revision/correction and auto-assessment based on the criteria described on the assessment part (see assessment methods)
Assessment methods
Into Italian (Danio Maldussi)
Assessment is by 2 hours written examination.
Into French (Yannick Hamon)
The students will have to translate a text of about 150-170 words. The content of the text will be in relation to the themes seen during the lessons.
The criteria are based on the respect of :
General layout and format from ST to TT
Macro textual norms of the text typology from ST to TT
Communication context from ST to TT
General and specific meaning in the the frame of the communication context
Linguistic aspects (spelling, syntax, vocabulary)
Correct use of idiomatic structures in french and translation of the cultural elements in the ST
