47941 - Pharmacotherapy of Metabolic Diseases

Learning outcomes

Examination of innovative aspects of pharmacotherapy of metabolic deseases and of aging. Comparisonamong traditional therapies and new and antiaging therapies. Critical analysis of these aspects. Analysis of metabolic deseases as obesity and bulimia, and analysis of therapeutic treatments and palliative ones.

Students will acquirea basic preparation which make them able to know the fundamental concepts in order to understand in the right way the therapeutical basis of more important metabolic deseases, and which make them able to give proper informationsto patients in pharmacy open to the public.

Course contents

An integrated approch to management of dyslipidemias, diabetes and hypertension.
Drugs used in the treatment of metabolic diseases: Wilson's disease, Gaucher's disease, carnitine's deficiency, porphyrias.
Pharmacotherapy of nutritional diseases: drigs used for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, treatment of obesity.
Antiaging drugs: hormonal therapies, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins.
Critical revision of “antiaging” therapies.
Palliative strategies for dementias, for macula degeneration and for cataract.

Assessment methods

During the last week of the course, there will be a written test in progress on the lessons topics in order to assess the theoretical knowledge of the students.
The final exam will be written with a series of questions requiring an open answer; the written test in progress, if done, will be also considered.
