Learning outcomes

The course aims to give the student fundamental knowledge relative to:

  • psychological implications related to illness with poor prognosis
  • psychological reactions to illness, care, hospitalization and rehabilitation program
  • the communication of diagnosis
  • management of relational dynamics related with relationship with the patient and family

Course contents

  • emotional reactions to illness with poor prognosis: reactions of anxiety and depression
  • defence mechanisms against anguish: denial, projction, rationalization and other defensive strategies
  • communication of diagnosis to the patient and family
  • psychological support in hospital
  • managing the relationship with the patient
  • the burnout in the health professions
