Academic Year 2011/2012

  • Moduli: Ferruccio Trifirò (Modulo 1) Fabrizio Cavani (Modulo 2) Giuseppe Fornasari (Modulo 3)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2) Traditional lectures (Modulo 3)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Industrial Chemistry (cod. 0884)

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes are: development and management of chemical processes; application of scale-up methodologies from lab to pilot and industrial plant; estimation of economic parameters; application of strategies for products separation, including the use of membranes; make evaluation of hazards associated to chemical productions, and perform risk assessment, using tools like FTA and HAZOP; make choices for the optimal management of a chemical process.

Course contents

Scale up criteria and methodologies. Physical, mathematical and chemical models. Piolot plants, mock-up plants. Experimental techniques to characterize plant performance: retention times distribution, hold-up measures, fluodynamic regimes determination. Analysis of chemical processes. Economical aspects. Examples of design of chemical processes. Flow-sheet design. Recycle structure. Strategies for the selection of separation processes. Use of membranes. Risk assessment. Hazop and FTA.  Risk management. Quality control in the chemical industry.  Formulation in the chemical industry. Intellectual property. Examples of development of chemical processes.

Laboratory of Industrial chemical processes. Exercitation: Hazop scheme of a bench reactor for methylation reaction of phenol. Development of a FTA for a first class incidental event concerning Hazop scheme. Laboratory  Control of catalyst synthesis: preparation of heteropolyacids of Keggin and Anderson type. Scale up of a chemical process: anisole acylation with acetic anhydride. Management of a chemical process: selective hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by metallic nanoparticles.
Management of a chemical process: visit of  a chemical plant.
