Learning outcomes

The student will  acquire the knowledge about the effects of the radiation when  interact with a biological system. Deterministic and stochastic damages; the protection and promotion of population health and the health care, the role of the physician in charge, radiation exposure monitoring and exposure limits.

Course contents

The 'action of ionizing radiation on biological material aimed at understanding the main effects on cells, tissues and organisms
The rationale of their use in medicine for diagnostic on the principle of their use according to the dictates of the delivery of doses as low as possible (ALARA as low as possible achievable)
The rationale of their use for therapeutic purposes in oncology and in some specific non-oncologic clinical situations according to the medical application of the principles of justification and optimization.
The rationale of fractionation of the radiation dose depending on the type of radiation used.
