Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students will understand the concept of information and will know the methods of digital representation and of elaboration systems of data in the field of humanities computer science.

Course contents

The course will regard the production of a digital edition of a literary text. In particular the content is:

Markup languages:

  • HTML  
  • XHTML and CSS
  • XML e XSL
  • RDF and semantic network
  • Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) 

Hypertextual digital editions. Projecting

  • the transcription
  • markup
  • metadata (TEI and Dublin Core)
  • the interfae

Hypertextual digital editions. Realization

  • philological transcription
  • description
  • document structure
  • semantic analysis
  • linguistic analysis

Teaching methods

Lessons will have a theoretical and a pratical part. The laboratory activity will offer the competences necessaries to create and manage digital resources for the humanities.

Assessment methods

The exam include a theoretical and a practical part, that will be discussed during the oral test. The first will regard the content handled during the course. The second regards the creation of a digital resource: a marked up text in XML/TEI (to be concorded with the teacher).

Teaching tools

The lessons will be holden in a computer room with PC in Internet network. The theoretical lessons will be accompanied to a practical part: use and critical analysis of tools, languages, Web sistes.
