Course contents
Course programme
Sociology is a discipline which uses its own particular concepts and research methods to study human societies as products of individual, group and institutional action. The course provides basic tools and knowledge for the comprehension and analysis of principal social phenomena. Each theme will be discussed with basic elements, theoretical approaches and the principal findings of recent research.
The course begins with a discussion of the following concepts: social action and interaction; groups, associations and organisations; regulations and institutions; culture and values; identity and socialisation. It will then deal with the central typical themes of sociological research, particularly: deviant behaviour, criminality, religion, stratification and social mobility, race and ethnic groups, families and marriage, education, economy, society, politics and globalisation.
