Course contents

«LATSANIA WITH STRAWBERRIES». MIGRANT'S FOOD.

Italy “invaded” by strangers is no more a one-dimension country, where the boundaries and the national identity coincide; also in the cultural field new identities and new cultures produced an amazingly vast and interesting literature of the migration.

In its pages the exploration of the new country and the homesickness stress the symbolic and cultural value of food, through unexpected tastes and the desire for the old fragrances.

In the same way millions of Italian immigrants felt the same uncertainty between new foods and longing for the traditional ones. They reacted by creating a mythical national cooking.

This course focuses on the Italian texts written by new and old emigrants, who tell a cookery métissage, where foods – such as the global taste of pizza and couscous, as well as spaghetti and kebab - become a workshop for a hospitable living together.

The cooking, as well as the literature that tells about it, prove to be an effective instrument to overcome prejudices and to know the others.
