Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at giving students central and basic notions regarding:

-         emotional reactions to illness, medical treatment and hospitalization

-         psychological implications of chronic illness in serious illness, in fatal prognosis and surgery

-     central abilities for an effective communication with the patient and the management of the relational dynamics with the patient

Course contents

bio-psycho-social model of illness

-         emotional reactions to illness, treatment and hospitalization in severe disorders and in the oncological illness (e.g. anxious reactions, depressive reactions, defence mechanisms, coping strategies)

-  psychological intervention in health care units and communication with the patient

- management of emotional relationships in the help practice

- stress and the burn-out syndrome in health care operators
