Course contents

Lectures Introduction to CFD, capabilities and limitations of CFD, examples; Governing equations of fluid motion for incompressible fluids, basic principles of turbulent flows, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, turbulence modeling; Basic principles of the finite-volume method, numerical discretization of the scalar transport equation, numerical approximation of surface and volume integrals, discretization schemes for convective and diffusive transport terms of the scalar transport equation, truncation error and order of accuracy of discretization schemes; The algebraic scalar transport equation, iterative methods, under-relaxation techniques; Overview of the pressure-velocity coupling problem; Overview of the finite-volume method for complex geometries

Tutorials Introduction to Gambit and Fluent using a sample problem, Analysis of laminar convection around a circular cylinder, Analysis of fully-developed turbulent flow in a flat channel

Assessment methods

No formal final exam, the grade will be based on the presentation of the final project
