Course contents

The course of the theatre in German speaking countries between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The world of the theatre provided a founding moment in establishing the literary identity of German-speaking countries.

We will outline the history of this genre starting from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century by reading and analysing plays that are still put on stage and are the subject of significant critical discussion. Works by the most representative authors in the period between 1750 and 1850 will be examined. Authors: G. E. Lessing (1729-1851), H. L. Wagner (1747-1779), J. W. Goethe (1749-1832), J. M. R. Lenz (1751-1792), F. M. Klinger (1752-1831), F. Schiller (1759-1805), A. S. von Kotzebue (1761-1819), J. F. von Weissenthurn, (1772-1847), H. von Kleist (1777-1811), F. Grillparzer (1791-1872), G. Büchner (1813-1837), F. Hebbel (1813-1863).
