Learning outcomes

The course intends to enable students to broaden the knowledge of Ancient Urban Planning and Architecture they have gained during their three-year degree. A specific topic will be analyzed in its various facets, in order to gain a full understanding of urban, architectural, and monumental works.

The course's purpose is to provide students with professional skills, enabling them to analyze ancient cities and their monuments.

Course contents

“URBAN  TIME”. Architectures of ancient cities and new perspectives (II)

From the standpoint of an ever-changing modernity, we well reflect on the strengths and characteristics of ancient structures that have survived throughout the centuries.

Analyzing significant examples, we will focus on times, dynamics, and “laws” that enabled ancient cities to survive, determining urban shape over the centuries. We will investigate main typologies and structural variables, focusing on their ability, bot on the architectonic and on the urban level, to new functions and needs.

We will try to demonstrate how only a narrow focus on urban past can enable urban planners to restore and re-function ancient cities without erasing their specific identity.

The course, approximately 30 hours long, will consist of a series of lectures.

Teaching methods

Lectures, which will include:

- Seminar sections

- Research work and discussion

Exhibition visits, and survey of monuments and archeological areas, will be part of the course.

Assessment methods

An oral exam, which will focus on students' knowledge and their ability to organize and convey it.

Students should internalize the method for the study of ancient architecture, describing each object from the historical as well as artistic viewpoint.

It is crucial that students identify various architectural typologies (temples, theatres, etc.) in their various stages. Instead of taking an oral exam, students can write a paper (discussing its topic with the instructor).

Teaching tools

Slides, hand-outs, and videoprojectors will be used during lectures.

Specific bibliographies will be provided on students' request and in case they decide to write a paper.
