Learning outcomes

The intent is  the production of the main metals and alloys. Properties of metals and alloys; modification of properties by thermal, thermochemical and thermomechanical methods to obtain the properties required by different applications.

Course contents

Basic metallurgy elements (recall). Processes for the production of the main metals and alloys. Production of steels and cast iron. Specialty steels. Non ferrous metals and their alloys. Properties of metals and alloys; modification of properties by thermal, thermochemical and thermomechanical methods. Welding processes. How to obtain the properties required by different applications. Defect analysis and influence of defects on the quality of metallic materials. Methods for evaluation and control of the properties of metals and alloys by standard tests. Metallography: interpretation and discussion of the main microstructures. Selection of etchants. Influence of microcostituents and preparation conditions. Morphological and microstructural analysis. Mechanical tests for the evaluation of the in-service behaviour of metals and alloys:

-         resilience as a function of temperature; interpretation  of fracture morphologies.

-         fatigue: elaboration of data from rotating flexural fatigue tests.

-         wear: microabrasion tests on different metals; evaluation of the abrasive wear coefficient and relationship with hardness.

Evaluation of chemical properties: corrosion resistance; interpretation  of the main corrosion morphologies. Spectroscopic and X-Ray diffraction analyses. Non-destructive tests.
