09795 - Theory of Structures (A)

Academic Year 2009/2010

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Long cycle 2nd degree programme in Architecture (cod. 0012)

Learning outcomes

Topics of structural mechanics, important for the practice are introduced to complete the background of the architect.

Course contents

1. Solution of plane frames.
Frames with fixed nodes. Frames with unfixed nodes. Symmetric and asymmetric frames. Mixed method of resolution. Virtual work principle.

2. Membranes and vaults.
Membranes of revolution. Thin vaults. Static analysis.

3. Grid beam system.
Plane grid beam system: at simple layer, at double layer and at folded layer. Grid beam system at simple curvature and at double curvature. The statics: classical method and the analogy with the continuum structures.

4. Introduction to  finite element methods for structural problems.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures and guided activities. The guided activities consist in the design, verification and executive drown of simple structures.

Assessment methods

A series of revisions of the activities of Laboratory will take place in itinere, at the end each student will be admitted to the final oral examination.
