Course contents

INTRODUCTION

Basic concepts. Units and dimensions. Forms of energy and its conservation.

 

THERMODYNAMICS

The nature of thermodynamics: temperature and heat. The first law of the thermodynamics: work and internal energy, energy balances and sign conventions. Applications of thermodynamics to the closed system. The second law of thermodynamics: statements and the principle of increase of entropy. The open system: control volume, conservation of mass. Macroscopic properties of pure substances: pressure-volume diagram for a substance, phases and saturation properties, moisture. Equations of state. Ideal gases, mixtures of ideal gases. Rankine and refrigeration cycles. Psychrometrics.

 

HEAT TRANSFER

Conduction: the Fourier's law and the heat diffusion equation. Thermal properties of matter. Steady-state conduction: thermal resistance, composite wall, radial system. Convection: the transfer equations. Laminar and turbulent flow, the boundary layer, the dimensionless parameters. Free and forced convection. Radiation: processes and properties, the black body. Multimode heat transfer. The overall heat transfer coefficient.

 

HVAC

Heating equipment, heating and cooling systems and applications. Load calculations and energy requirements: weather information, thermal insulation and moisture retarders, fenestration, building envelope systems. Energy performance of buildings.

 

APPLIED ACOUSTICS

Frequency spectrum and bandwidths. Building acoustics, architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics. Room acoustics, reverberation time. Material properties: sound absorption and sound insulation.

Assessment methods

Oral exam: different themes of  thermodynamics, heat transfer, HVAC and acoustics will be discussed. The themes may concern basic or applied concepts, with reference to the applications presented during the course. In addition, the possibility of written exams on the first parts of the program will be offered during the lessons period.
