Learning outcomes
Aim will be to increase the basic knowledge about engineering
material choice and manufacturing technology with regards to heat
treatments sequences.
Course contents
LECTURES
HARDNESS and microhardness measurements and machines
(Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell).
STEELS. Fick's laws. TTT and CCT diagrams. Quenching and
Tempering. Heat Treatments of steels. Tenifer, Sulf-inuz, Sulf BT.
Materials choice. Weldability and material choice.
STAINLESS STEELS. Introduction to stainless steels.
Shaffler's diagrams. Martensitic, ferritic, austenitic, duplex and
precipitation hardening stainless steels. Heat treatments and
choice for stainless steels.
ALUMINIUM AND ALUMINIUM ALLOY. Introducion to
Aluminium and to Aluminium Alloys. Effect of main alloys: Cu,
Si, Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cr, Ti, Sn. Designation. Heat treatment of
Aluminum Alloys. Foundry processes, deformation and machining of
Aluminium Alloy. Welding of Aluminium Alloys: methods and
problems.
PLASTICS. Introduction to plastics.Thermoset
materials. Crosslinking. Thermoset types, general properties,
manufacturing technology and types. Phenolics (PF), Amino Plastics
(UF & MF), Polyester Themosets and Unsaturated Polyester (UP),
Epoxies (EP), Polyurethanes (PUR). Thermoplastic materials
(Commodity Plastics). Thermoplastic types, general properties,
manufacturing technology and types. Polyethylene (PE),
Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Designing with
Plastics.
EXERCISES & LABORATORY ACTIVITIES
A) Hardness measurements by means of Rockwell and Vichers
machines on to steels and Aluminium alloys. DIEM Laboratory.
B) Experimental activities by metallographical microscopy.
C) Prediction of structures in steels due to heat treatments.
D) Studies about complex mechanical parts: material choice, heat
treatment and machining sequences.
E) Visit to a Heat Treatment Plant.
