Learning outcomes

Title: History of the Idea of Europe

The seminary of the duration of 12 hours is dedicated to the complex cultural construction of Europe. Starting out from the philological reading of selected historical texts students will get acquainted with the specific bibliography concerning the problem and acquire by means of a critical reading of historical and literary sources a specific knowledge of the contributions which romanesque medieval tradition has given to the modern idea of Europe in terms of literature.

Course contents

I. Philological reading of parts of antique (Herodotus and greek historians, Caesar, Ovid etc.) and modern texts (F. Chabod, Storia dell'idea d'Europa; M. Banniard, La genesi culturale dell'Europa etc.) on the idea of Europe in geographical, mythical an literary terms. II. Philological reading of modern literary texts – observed from different points of view: the poetry of war; duration of forms: lyrics, tale, novel etc. – in which the influence of romance medieval texts is recognizable: poetry (Pound, Beckett, Pasolini, D'Elia etc.), tales (M.V. Montalbán, G. Bufalino, Th. Mann, A. Byatt etc.), theater and cinema.
