Learning outcomes

-         Learning outcomes :

The course aims to look into narration and storytelling, analysing complex metaphors on which fiction is based. Moreover, it examines the “saving function” of fiction, literature, drama and cinema, as well as the “need” of stories and the exchange of imagery.

It also stresses the importance of storytelling as a distinctive human act. The main guideline is a glance on childhood literature and its influence on teenage and adult readers; the course analyses the imagery in the stories, plots as well as the connections between the style of writing and the plots themselves.

Course contents

-         Contents :

The course is about the following topics:

-         the complexity of storytelling and the narrative act;

-         the human need of stories, plots, tales, fantastic stories and of fiction;

-         the report and the storytelling (the reader, the listener, the observer, the writer, the storyteller; the self, the story, the other; the healing and the invisible healing in the storytelling);

-         Why do we enquire into the “saving function” of storytelling?;

-         childhood literature as mark of the unforgettable, the imprinting for the creation of imagery;

-         the way of relating / storytelling / explaining / reading / writing / saying... (the book, the images, the theatre, the cinema, the new frontiers of mass media communication...);

-         the assumption of a root-story: the tale;

-         tales and fantastic elements;

-         literary genres and contaminations;

-         a glance on childhood literature: plots, characters, settings, metaphors, the outcomes.

Assessment methods

Oral exam. Students have to prepare a brief account taken from their own research that must include topics and connections from both readings and personal inquiry linked to the course. Students who attend lectures can arrange their topic with the lecturer during lessons. Students who do not attend are supposed to meet the lecturer at the office or contact her by e-mail.
