Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

Through this course the student learns the basic elements of design of structural elements for a reinforced concrete and/or steel building. At the end of the class, the student has acquired the skills in: Definition of actions and strength models: design loads, limit state load combinations; soil strength and compressibility parameters from experimental data. Development of a numerical model of the structure and simplified models. Design of the floor slabs: hollow clay blocks slabs and 1-way slabs. Design of beams and columns: ultimate limit state and serviceability limit states. Design of foundations.

Contenuti

Geotechnical Design Laboratory: In this part of the laboratory, students will be engaged in practical design projects, such as defining the geotechnical model of a site and determining bearing capacity and settlements of a soil-foundation system, to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world geotechnical engineering problems.

Structural Mechanics Laboratory: In this part of the laboratory course, students will learn the basic concepts of the Finite Element Method (FEM), especially in the context of structural matrix analysis. They will then be engaged in the practical implementation of these concepts by means of both a programming language and a FEM-based software.

Structural Design Laboratory: In this part of the laboratory course, students will be engaged in the practical design of a regular multistorey reinforced concrete frame building. In detail, the students will develop the structural design (preliminary sizing, calculations, verifications, detailing, drawings) of the main structural elements including slab, beams and columns. The design and verifications will be carried out combining simplified methods for structural analysis and verification with FE-based modelling and code verifications according to Eurocodes prescriptions. As result, the student will produce a calculation report and technical drawings.

Metodi didattici

The lectures are presented with the aid of slides and integrated with demonstrations at the board. Practical examples are illustrated during the course, also with applications.
