Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The course aims to provide the tools and knowledge to understand the evolution of the international relations in the period between the Congress of Vienna and the end of the Cold War. Through the reconstruction of the events, protagonists and crises that marked international relations in the 19th and 20th centuries, students will acquire the skills and analytical tools to grasp the complex issues underlying the international dimension of political systems and to frame, with autonomous and critical reflection, the multiple scenarios of contemporary geopolitics. The course aims to provide the historical and conceptual foundations that will enable students to develop an original and critical approach to the study of international relations within the broader context of international and diplomatic sciences. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with the protagonists and the main developments of international relations in their bilateral and global dynamics and will be able to interpret the major political and geopolitical transformations that occurred in the European and non-European spheres during the contemporary age.

2. End of the Napoleonic Wars, Holy Alliance, the creation and crisis of the Vienna System.
3. The formation of new states on the map of Europe: Germany and Italy.
4. From the pacifist movement to the formation of political-military blocs.
5. World War I and the formation of the Versailles system.
6. The Russian Revolution and its global consequences.
7. Post-Locarno period in Europe.
8. The crisis of the Versailles system and the growing military threat.
9. The Second World War and the emergence of the Yalta-Potsdam system.
10. Beginning of the Cold War: formation of economic and military-political blocs.

Metodi didattici

Il corso consisterà in lezioni mirate a introdurre gli studenti alle questioni chiave delle relazioni internazionali e alla loro interpretazione storica. L'attenzione sarà focalizzata sull'evoluzione dell'ordine internazionale negli ultimi due secoli. Si porrà l'accento sull'analisi delle politiche estere di varie regioni geografiche nel contesto della natura dinamica delle relazioni internazionali. Inoltre, saranno affrontati diversi temi trasversali per esplorare e approfondire la comprensione delle questioni attuali.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Gli studenti che frequentano regolarmente le lezioni, con frequenza potenzialmente verificata dai docenti, dovranno sostenere due verifiche scritte. Queste valutazioni saranno effettuate al termine della prima e della seconda metà del corso, rispettivamente per le prime e le ultime dieci lezioni. Ciascuna valutazione consisterà in quattro o cinque domande a risposta aperta sugli argomenti trattati nella corrispondente parte del corso.

In caso di assenza da una delle valutazioni, che deve essere giustificata, la parte del programma corrispondente sarà valutata durante l'esame attraverso un colloquio orale. Nel caso in cui lo studente riceva un risultato negativo in una o entrambe le valutazioni scritte, o scelga di rifiutare il voto finale ottenuto, dovrà ripetere l'esame per la rispettiva parte del programma attraverso un colloquio orale.

Per gli studenti che abbiano superato con successo entrambe le valutazioni scritte, l'esame orale comprenderà un paio di domande generali sul contenuto del libro di testo, con un focus principale su una monografia selezionata dall'elenco fornito al punto 2 della Bibliografia. La discussione sulla monografia mira a valutare le capacità analitiche e di riflessione critica dello studente sulle questioni presentate nel testo selezionato.

Gli studenti non frequentanti devono prepararsi autonomamente all'esame studiando il libro di testo e selezionando due volumi dall'elenco fornito. La loro preparazione sarà valutata durante l'esame orale, nel quale dovranno dimostrare di comprendere le dinamiche che hanno caratterizzato la storia delle relazioni internazionali nel XIX e XX secolo e di confrontarsi criticamente con i temi e i problemi affrontati nei due testi selezionati dall'elenco di monografie.
