Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire
At the end of the course the student will know the important innovations ongoing in industries aimed to the production and exploitation of nanomaterials. He/she will become skilled in the techniques available for the challenging characterization of nanomaterials and on the possible threats they pose on health and safety of humans and the environment. The student is expected to be able to: 1. propose innovative solutions for the obtainment fo nanomaterial; 2. find innovative application to nanosized materials and find correct applications of nanomaterials for specific problems
Contenuti
The UC consists of three modules, with the following contents:
(1) Nanomanufacturing and nanoprocessing
Top-down and bottom-up fabrication approaches, Lithography, Deposition techniques, Processing of layers, Plastics and polymers as functional materials in top-down approaches, Fabrication of final devices.
(2) Synthesis and Characterization of Nanomaterials
Classification of nano-structured materials. Synthetic strategies of nanomaterials: bottom-up and top-down. Characterization methods nanomaterials: Optical Microscopy; Scanning Electron Microscopy; Transmission Electron Microscopy; Scanning Tunneling Microscopy; Scanning Probe Microscopy; Infrared and Raman Microscopy; X-ray diffraction. A case study: nanomaterials for biomedical applications
(3) Health and Safety of Nanotechnology
Introduction to nanotechnology. Definitions of nanomaterials. Fate and behavior of nanomaterials in environmental and biological media. Effects and sub-organism, organism, population and communities. Predictive toxicology. Hazard and exposure assessment. Risk characterisation. Relevant regulatory framework.
