Unijunior: Learn to Grow

Unijunior is a university programme for young students aged 8 to 13, designed to introduce the next generation to knowledge and learning.

The activities are divided into two main sessions, one running from November to March in Bologna (Unijunior Bologna), and another from February to May, hosted in the university campuses across the Romagna region: Forlì, Cesena, Ravenna, and Rimini (Unijunior Romagna).

This initiative combines scientific knowledge with outreach, making complex content accessible through simple language and interactive, engaging formats tailored for younger audiences.
Unijunior is co-designed and organised by the University of Bologna and the Cultural and Recreational Association Fun Science.

A Multidisciplinary Programme for Young Minds

Unijunior stands out for its diverse offering, covering a wide range of scientific and humanities disciplines, including astronomy, chemistry, physics, biology, medicine, engineering, computer science, history, philosophy, literature, economics, and sociology.

The programme features various formats: lectures, workshops, and guided tours. Topics range from the history of dinosaurs to the discovery of the planets in our solar system, from urban art to cryptography and the origins of fantasy, and many more.

The programme also addresses socially relevant issues, including environmental, social, and economic sustainability, inspired by the UN 2030 Agenda (e.g., circular economy, climate change). It explores STEM subjects and cross-cutting skills such as critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and acceptance of diversity, making the project a valuable opportunity to help shape tomorrow’s citizens.

How Unijunior Works

Unijunior is a year-round programme with activities held one or more Saturdays each month, culminating in a grand final celebration.

During this event, young participants are awarded the title of Unijunior Doctor and receive an official diploma in recognition of their efforts and participation, celebrated with their teachers, families, and Fun Science scientists, who animate the day with science-themed theatrical performances.

Unijunior Locations: Bologna and the Romagna Campuses

The many classrooms provided by the University create an authentic academic environment, offering young participants the chance to experience university life first-hand.

The History of Unijunior: An Italian Excellence

Active since 2009, Unijunior is the first Italian “Children’s University” and is part of the international network Eucu.net (European Children’s Universities Network).

It has been recognised as a best practice with high social impact by the AESIS-Advancing & Evaluating the Societal Impact of Sciences network.
