General information on teaching tutors
The figure of the teaching tutor
The teaching tutor performs supplementary teaching activities, such as exercises, workshops and seminars in the context of the subjects covered by the programme, as well as providing student supervision, assistance and support, either during lectures - also across the entire degree programme - or to acquire supplementary training skills.
The contract, which runs for the entire academic year, cannot be extended but may be renewed for a maximum period of five academic years.
Who can become a teaching tutor
- Candidates may apply for teaching tutor assignments connected with first-cycle degree programmes if they have a first-cycle degree or equivalent.
- Candidates may apply for teaching tutor assignments connected with second-cycle degree programmes, single-cycle degree programmes and specialisation schools or if they have a second-cycle degree programme, a single-cycle degree programme or equivalent.
- Candidates may apply for teaching tutor assignments connected with third-cycle degree programmes and postgraduate degrees if they have a second-cycle degree programme, a single-cycle degree programme or equivalent. If a teaching tutor is enrolled is a third-cycle degree programme and the tutoring activities are carried out as part of the programme in which teaching tutor is enrolled, the said tutoring activities must be carried out for the benefit of students who enrolled the year after the teaching tutor.

Teaching tutor contracts may not be awarded to the following:
- Professors or assistant professors at any Italian university;
- Anyone with a degree of kinship or affinity up to and including the fourth degree with a professor of the structure involved in the training activities, the Rector, the Director General or a member of the Board of Governors of the University;
- Anyone who has had a previous contract terminated due to a serious breach or a violation of the University's Code of Ethics and Conduct;
- Anyone enrolled in a degree programme in the area of the teaching tutor contract;
- Holders of tutoring fellowships pursuant to Ministerial Decree no. 198 of 2003;
How to become a teaching tutor
Applicants must pass a public selection process, either on the basis of qualifications only or on the basis of qualifications and an interview.
A non-casual self-employment contract (continuous and coordinated contractual relationship based on one or more projects, or freelance contract for those already registered for VAT) is signed between the university and the winner of the selection process. The agreement does not qualify as a salaried employment contract and does not give right of access to the roles of university staff.
Remuneration
The remuneration is stated in the call for applications and determined by contract, in compliance with the interministerial decree.
Payment is subject to the head of the teaching structure or his/her delegate signing the certificate of completion of the tutor’s activities.
Holders of teaching tutor assignments are included among the beneficiaries of the accident and third-party liability insurance taken out by the University for damages involuntarily caused as a result of the activities carried out.
Training and professional development
Teaching tutors are required to attend mandatory training courses on occupational health and safety and personal data protection.
Concessions and benefits
The University provides certain concessions and benefits for external fixed-term staff.
