In accordance with the principles of honesty, transparency, accountability and accuracy stated in the University Policy for an Ethical and Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in teaching and research and in knowledge valorisation, it is crucial that each and every contribution deriving from substantial use of GenAI is acknowledged and declared.
In particular, stating the use of GenAI every time it is used substantially is important to:
- Acknowledge the contribution of AI tools to the creative, research, teaching and learning process, in order to incentivise transparency, protect intellectual property rights and respect other people's work.
- Encourage a conscious and responsible use of technological tools, highlighting the centrality of the human being in applying critical thinking and implementing active supervision of results and the need for checking AI output accuracy, as it can generate inaccurate or biased information.
- Ensure fairness in the assessment of students to make sure that they are all assessed based on merit.
- Promoting ethics in academic learning and education.
The University provides clear and homogeneous recommendations on how to make citations. These recommendations are for anyone using GenAI, including students, teaching staff, research staff and teaching assistants.
Having particular regard to research staff, the University is aware that some publishers and research funding bodies have introduced mandatory modes of citation, which must be followed when available as an alternative to the University recommendations.
