Main applicable regulations and guidelines governing the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in teaching and research.

Below are the main applicable regulations and guidelines relevant to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and research. These documents lay the ethical, legal and operational foundations for using AI in a responsible and compliant manner.

  • AI and Education: Guidance for Policy-Makers, Miao, F., Holmes, W., Huang, R., & Zhang, H. (2021), Paris: UNESCO.

Guidance is provided on the integration of artificial intelligence into education systems. The publication deals with opportunities and challenges arising from the use of AI and underlines the importance of ensuring equity, inclusion and an ethical use of technology in education.

  • AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024).

The purpose of this Regulation is to create a legal framework for artificial intelligence (AI) in the European Union. The AI Act relies on the principle that artificial intelligence should be developed and used safely, ethically and in accordance with the fundamental rights and values of the European Union.

  • ALLEA (All European Academies). The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2017).

The document lays down the fundamental principles for research integrity, including ethical requirements in using new technology.

  • Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI. European Commission (2019).

The guidelines outline key requirements to ensure that AI is transparent, ethical and safe, such as technical robustness and data governance, transparency and accountability, and respect for fundamental rights.

  • Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research ERA (European Research Area) Forum stakeholders' document.

The document focusses on the use of AI to support scientific research and innovation in Europe, encouraging ethical and innovative practices in research.
