General information on language trainers
The figure of the language trainer
The holder of a language training assignment:
- delivers L2 training in foreign languages and Italian;
- participates in the preparation and administration of assessments to determine the starting, intermediate and final skills and to obtain certifications;
- uses the teaching platforms provided by the teaching facility;
- guarantees utmost flexibility regarding the course timetable, which can also extend into the evenings and Saturdays.
These activities are carried out at the Language Centre of the University of Bologna and are regularly validated by its supervisor, who certifies their due performance.
The contract, which runs for the entire academic year, cannot be extended but may be renewed for a maximum period of five academic years.
Who can become a language trainer
Candidates may apply for the selection procedures if they have a first-cycle degree or equivalent and the additional language and experience requirements set out in the individual calls for applications for language trainers.
Language training contracts may not be awarded to the following:
- Professors or assistant professors at any Italian university;
- Anyone with a degree of kinship or affinity up to and including the fourth degree with a professor of the structure involved in the training activities, the Rector, the Director General or a member of the Board of Governors of the University;
- Anyone who has had a previous contract terminated due to a serious breach or a violation of the University's Code of Ethics and Conduct;
- Anyone enrolled in a degree programme in the area of the language training;
- Holders of tutoring fellowships pursuant to Ministerial Decree no. 198 of 2003;
How to become a language trainer
Applicants must pass a public selection process on the basis of qualifications and an interview.
A non-casual self-employment contract (continuous and coordinated contractual relationship based on one or more projects, or freelance contract for those already registered for VAT) is signed between the university and the winner of the selection process. The agreement does not qualify as a salaried employment contract and does not give right of access to the roles of university staff.
Remuneration
The remuneration is stated in the call for applications and determined by contract, based on parameters defined by the academic bodies in accordance with the interministerial decree.
The remuneration is normally be paid in two-monthly instalments in arrears and is subject to a periodic certificate of fulfilment, duly signed by the director of the centre or his/her delegate.
Holders of language training assignments are included among the beneficiaries of the accident and third-party liability insurance taken out by the University for damages involuntarily caused as a result of the activities carried out.
Training and professional development
Language trainers are required to attend mandatory training courses on occupational health and safety and personal data protection.
Concessions and benefits
The University provides certain concessions and benefits for external fixed-term staff.
