Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master - 120 ECTS) in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

The second cycle degree programme in International Relations aims to train specialists capable of analyzing, with a sound critical outlook, the most important political systems, the relations between them, the areas of and reasons for conflicts, conflict solution methods, the role of international organizations – including the EU - from an economic and political point of view, the international legal and regulatory evolution and the trends in globalization processes at political, economic, cultural and environmental level.
In particular, the programme aims to provide sound advanced training, also methodological, to extend and strengthen students' knowledge mainly as regards the international approach of historical-political, economic, legal and politological subject areas, adopting teaching methods that allow students to develop and apply their own personal and original study path in terms of research and thought. The interdisciplinary approach – thanks to the presence of courses that tackle political-cultural dynamics of different regional and international contexts from different perspectives including, race, ethnic groups and gender – and the in-depth study of different geo-political areas contribute to broadening students' knowledge and skills and allowing them to develop the understanding and analytical skills necessary for solving problems that will arise in the working contexts in which second cycle degree graduates will operate as officers and political analysts (from a diplomatic career to international organisations, from NGOs to international offices, strategic management, offices in large international private companies, and international offices in public organisations and companies at local and national level). The programme also aims to train officers and political analysts capable of approaching political, economic, legal, social and cultural phenomena from a local, regional, global and transnational dimension because the local-global connection is essential to analyse the problems related to contemporary international space in depth over a long period.
The advanced and in-depth knowledge of historical-political, legal, economic and politological themes provide second cycle degree graduates with a professional yet flexible profile as required by the social groups; graduates have the skills to organise and manage projects, apply their knowledge and skills to analyse and solve new problems, develop abilities, which, combined with the knowledge and skills acquired, are useful in negotiation and conflict mediation situations. For this purpose teaching methods such as seminar discussions that enhance students' ability to summarise both orally and in writing complex texts or texts on specific cases, the preparation of a thesis or report on a period of internship, allow second cycle degree graduates to broaden their communication and presentation skills, also through the proficiency in two European languages apart from Italian.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY:
Graduates:

- will have advanced knowledge of themes, programme content and methodologies for the critical analysis of political, economic, social, legal and cultural events;

- will have knowledge of the characteristics of international systems and the ability to identify those that characterise the post-cold war context;

- will be able to identify different foreign politics traditions and lines of European countries, useful for outlining a context of reference for political decision-making;

- will have knowledge of the main strategic theories and instruments for monitoring modern military conflicts.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND TO UNDERSTAND:
Graduates:
- will be able to view international contemporary dynamics with a long-term perspective, in relation to geopolitical characteristics and with a comparative and transnational outlook;

- will have command over the analysis categories of economic research and will be able to apply them to different geopolitical contexts;

- will be able to outline projects for identifying institutional and political instruments for the management of high and low intensity political and military conflicts on the basis of an analysis of the resources available.

JUDGEMENT SKILLS
Graduates:

- will be able to combine knowledge and analysis instruments so as to identify the political and cultural roots that generate discrimination mechanisms based on race, ethnic groups, gender and religion at national and international level;

- will be able to analyse, through the use of juridical categories and in-depth knowledge of how international regulations are established, problems related to self-determination of peoples and individual rights and the dynamics related to global transformations in the working world;

- will be able to evaluate the specificity of the onset of crises and of alternative solutions to military conflicts on the basis of their historical, economic, political and legal knowledge.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Graduates:

- will have advanced knowledge of English and a second European language;

- will be able to communicate confidently using specialised vocabulary related to historical-political-international subject areas.
