  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Pedagogy - Science of education (cod. 9206)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Pedagogy - Science of education (cod. 9206)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory, the student: - can independently apply the specific techniques learned, either autonomously or within projects organized by institutions; - can engage in discussions with others regarding the use and documentation of the acquired techniques; - can contextualize the acquired knowledge within different types of services; - can assess the strengths and limitations of the technical tools learned; - can adapt and integrate the acquired technologies into diverse contexts, making personal modifications and enhancements.

Course contents

The Design an empirical research in education laboratory aims to promote the development of skills in designing and managing procedures and tools for data collection and analysis, supporting students in acquiring knowledge and abilities that are also useful for preparing and writing their final thesis.

The laboratory is integrated with the course on Methodology of empirical research in education, providing an opportunity to develop practical skills that facilitate the understanding and in-depth exploration of the course content.

Through an experiential, critical, and reflective approach, the laboratory offers methodologies and tools applicable to various educational and social contexts (early childhood, schools, career guidance services, pedagogical consultancy, and public administration).

Below is a detailed description of each laboratory session, including the learning objectives that students are expected to achieve.

First session – Database research and reading of scientific articles

Objective: Learn how to construct search strings, explore and consult academic databases, collect and archive selected documents, and read and comprehend a scientific article.

Second session – Questionnaire design and administration

Objective: Design the structure of a questionnaire, define the questions, develop an online format for administration, and plan the distribution methods.

Third session – Analysis of data collected through a questionnaire

Objective: Build a data matrix, import it into statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Jamovi), use basic functions of statistical analysis software, and prepare a report to present the results.

Fourth session – Designing and conducting an interview

Objective: Develop a grid for conducting an interview, manage the interaction with the interviewee in a simulated context (roleplay), and handle the post-interview phases.

Fifth session – Analysis of interview transcriptions

Objective: Prepare the transcription of an interview, import it into qualitative analysis software (e.g., MaxQDA, NVivo), use the basic functions of qualitative analysis software to code and interpret data, and draft a report to present the results.

Sixth session – Artificial Intelligence and Immersive Virtual Reality for empirical research in education

Objective: Utilize advanced technological tools for educational research, specifically experimenting with generative artificial intelligence for assisted reading and in-depth comprehension of scientific articles, as well as immersive virtual reality to simulate integrated educational environments.
