Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Sociology and Social Work (cod. 8786)

Learning outcomes

The course will provide students with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the role of European law in shaping gender policies. By the end of the course, students will:
• acquire the ability to critically analyze and evaluate relevant laws and policies, as well as their implementation at the European, national, and local levels;
• develop basic skills in legal research;
• gain the ability to produce structured, logical, analytical, and well-referenced summaries of relevant materials.

Course contents

The course, part of the European Project Jean Monnet Module GEMS, aims to explore the issue of gender equality at legal level in the context of European integration.

The main contents of the course will cover different aspects related to gender equality and the multiple implications of the integration process of the European Union on the status of women.

The theme of gender equality at European level will be examined in depth by examining the Treaties establishing the European Union, from Rome to Lisbon and the European principles on gender equality, the main policies affecting this area and recent initiatives such as the European Pillar of Social Rights, the European Strategy for Gender Equality 2020-2025 and the regulations that stem from this.

At the same time, the theme of gender equality at national level will be examined in depth and will be crucial to understanding how the architecture of the European legal system supports or hinders the development of gender equality. In particular, the Constitution will be examined and the areas where gender equality is most evident (family, work, political representation).

Finally, the theme of gender equality at regional and local level will be examined with the specific case of gender budgets, and women’s rights in urban areas. In this respect, gender budgeting and gender mainstreaming will be two tools considered to evaluate policies undertaken by public actors.
