Course contents
The laboratory Linguistic and Cultural Diversity at School focuses on classroom everyday life in highly heterogeneous contexts. We will approach the growing diversity of contemporary schools by focusing on concrete episodes video-recorded in the classroom. Starting from the observation of teachers’ and students’ everyday practices, we will discuss about broader issues such as the social inclusion of children with a migratory background. The observation of mundane events in the classroom will also serve as a basis to analyze teachers’ and students’ orientation towards linguistic and cultural diversity. For instance, by carefully analyzing teachers’ ways of interacting with non-native children, we will highlight the beliefs and educational ideologies that inform their professional practice.
The lab is divided into several sub-themes, each exploring a specific aspect of the more general topic of diversity. Specifically, we will discuss about (a) stereotypes and prejudices in teachers’ and students’ discourse, (b) (the construction of) social identities in heterogeneous contexts, (c) students’ communicative competence and the acquisition of Italian as L2, (d) everyday conflicts involving the teacher and in the peer group. These topics will be addressed on the basis of video-recorded episodes and with reference to previous research at the national and international level. We will work in small groups and the discussion will be based on students’ active participation.
