B4912 - Communication strategies in patient care (emergency X-ray, CT, MRI, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine)

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 9079)

Learning outcomes

The English course designed for incoming Erasmus students aims to develop communication skills for interactions with patients and caregivers. Radiographers play a crucial role in patient care, balancing high-tech equipment and protocols with effective communication to facilitate the execution of radiological techniques in contexts such as Emergency/Urgency, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine. Successful collaboration with the patient is essential for optimizing execution times and obtaining high-quality images. The course focuses on helping students understand the importance of clear communication in simplifying the approach to diagnostics, such as MRI, which is often associated with fear and mistrust. In Radiotherapy, students learn to communicate effectively with adult patients, children, caregivers, and within a team setting. In Nuclear Medicine, where safety distances of 1.5 meters or more are necessary due to ionizing radiation, students acquire effective communication skills despite the increased physical distance.

Teaching methods

Engaging frontal lessons involving role-playing and case simulations, as well as group work and practical exercises.

Assessment methods

The student will need to create a project on PowerPoint and present it in public in English. The project work has several objectives: 1. Highlight the critical elements of communication with patients in diagnostics and therapy. 2. Emphasize the relational and communication tools to be used. 3. Demonstrate good public speaking skills. Each presentation will be discussed in a group, and a final evaluation out of thirty will be assigned.
