90971 - Technical Sciences of Radiological Imaging in Densitometry and Odontostomatology (RN)

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 6063)

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the techniques for the radiographic study of the dental apparatus: endoral and extraoral tecnique, projections and correctness criteria. Use of the OPT device (orthopantomograph) for the study of the dental apparatus and for cephalometric study in teleradiography. Orthodontic indications and dental skeletal class evaluations. Communication and radiation protection required in paediatrics. The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) study: techniques and X-ray projections and criteria correctness.

Course contents

Anatomical Overview of the Oral Cavity and Teeth: Deciduous dentition, permanent dentition, implantology, and international nomenclature.

Dental Imaging Techniques in Adults and Children: Intraoral and extraoral (Orthopantomography) imaging techniques.

Cephalometric Imaging Techniques: Cranial teleradiography, A.P.(anteroposterior) and L.L. (lateral-lateral) projections, and dental skeletal classes.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Study: Overview of anatomy, clinical indications, projections, and criteria for accuracy.

Overview of Cone Beam CT, Dental Scan Software, and Sialography.

Densitometric Imaging Techniques: Definition of the various branches of Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD): conventional radiology (pulsed energy and filtered energy), CT, and ultrasound.
