Learning outcomes

The student acquires the techniques for the radiological study of the devices with and without MDC, the preparation of the patient and knows the relevant MDC, the rules of radioprotection and patient handling

Course contents

The teaching of the Technical Sciences Course of Radiological Imaging of the Abdomen and Thorax with and without contrast medium aims to enable the student to acquire useful techniques for radiological studies of the thoraco-abdominal systems with and without contrast medium with the relevant patient preparations in various methods.
The program is divided into:
1) I mention geometric parameters: planes and projections, reference points and their use
2) Mention of physical parameters: KV, mA, time and their use
3) Natural and Artificial Contrast Agents used for diagnostic purposes in the human body
4) Chest Radiographic Study: Notes on anatomy, projections, criteria and problems based on the method of execution (standard, bedside, OR)
5) Radiographic Study of the Abdomen: Notes on anatomy, projections, criteria and problems based on the method of execution (standard, bedside, in orthostasis and supine, in SO)
6) Radiological Study of the Digestive System: Diagnostic investigations with and without contrast medium in reference to the First Route, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Bowel Enema, Barium Enema, Defecography and Fistulography, with notes on anatomy, preparation and execution, projections and correctness criteria .
7) Radiological study of the Salivary Glands: Diagnostic investigations with and without contrast medium, notes on anatomy, preparation and execution, projections and correctness criteria.
8) Radiological study of the Biliary Tracts: Investigations in reference to Intraoperative and post-operative Cholangiography, Percutaneous Cholangiography and ERCP, Cholacystography for OS and Cholangiography, with notes on anatomy, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and correctness criteria.
9) Radiological study of the Urinary Tract: Cystography, Descending Urography, Retrograde Cystourethrography, Pyelography, with notes on anatomy, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and correctness criteria.
10) Radiological Study of the Male and Female Reproductive Systems: Hysterosalpingography with notes on anatomy and radiographic techniques for the study of the Male Reproductive System, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and correctness criteria.

Teaching methods

Interactive lectures with PPT presentation, case discussions through the viewing of Thoraco-abdominal Diagnostic Imaging Case Reports, practical and theoretical exercises in the classroom and in the field and related discussion with an approach to the Clinical Reasoning Cycle

Assessment methods

At the end of the Course the Student will be assessed through two tests
Part 1
Written assignment with open questions preparatory to the oral exam.
During the written exam, the candidate will be shown an x-ray image of a body area for which they must be identified

• clinical indications
• the study technique
• any problems
Part 2
Oral interview during which the topics covered during the frontal lessons will be considered also through the viewing/discussion of x-ray images
They will be evaluated
• knowledge of contents
• the argument
• clarity and mastery of presentation
• interaction and critical ability

Teaching tools

Teaching Material: Frontal lessons using PPT and all the teaching contents covered during the lessons will be shared through the UniBO VIRTUAL platform
Instruments: Radiological Equipment, Digital Radiological Systems, Radiographic Cassettes,

Radiographic Material and more.

The teaching material may undergo updates and/or modifications based on technical-scientific developments and organizational teaching contingencies.
All students will be provided with a copy of the teaching material used during the lessons.
