Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student understands the variety and complexity of the cultural systems of English-speaking countries; they are capable of understanding and producing a wide range of complex written texts and oral speeches in English, expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously. The skills acquired by the end of the second year are approximately at the C1 level
Course contents
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the language and culture of the United States of America. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will examine the historical, social, and cultural aspects that have shaped American identity and communication patterns. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the language practices, cultural values, and communication styles that are unique to the United States. Particular attention will focus on the Italian American experience and memes.

Traditional lectures, viewings and discussions.
Assessment methods
The exam comprises a writing portfolio and an oral presentation on topics during the course.

**Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of total classes.
Marks
Students who demonstrate an excellent comprehension of the written and oral texts proposed and produce well-researched written and oral work in a clear, correct and communicative English will obtain an ‘excellent’ mark (28-30).
Students who demonstrate a good comprehension of the written and oral texts proposed and produce correct written and oral work will obtain an ‘average’ mark (23-27).
Students who demonstrate a superficial understanding of the written and oral texts proposed with adequate but not written and oral work will be given a ‘pass’ mark (18-22)
Students who are unable to demonstrate an adequate understanding of the written and oral texts proposed and whose written and oral production is incorrect, difficult to understand or with major grammatical, lexical or phonological errors will get a ‘fail’ mark.
Teaching tools
Course specific PPT presentations, films & documentaries, and podcasts. Assignments and activities will be carried out both in class and at home.
Most if not all printed and audiovisual material used in class, as well as resources for the specific topics tackled in class, will be made available on the Virtuale e-learning site.
