Learning outcomes

Students will be able to understand, analyse and produce oral speeches belonging to relevant text types, also in multimedia. They will acquire the ability to express themselves fluently in complex communicative situations.

Course contents

The Russian Language Course for Interpreters aims to explore certain language topics in order to bring students to an adequate level of comprehension and production skills (especially oral). There will be exercises in listening, transcription, analysis and re-elaboration of speeches on current affairs, economics, problems in society, etc. A number of key topics concerning Russian morphosyntax will also be addressed, with particular emphasis on the following linguistic topics:

- Aspectuality as a universal category. The verbal aspect in Slavic languages and Russian - formation, semantics and syntax, pragmatic uses

- Collocations in Russian

- Word formation in Russian

- The concept of the Aktionsart

- Lexical and syntactic synonymy. Converbs.

Russian Language Lab for Interpreters

The Language Lab offers exercises that aim at deepening the students’ knowledge of syntax and sentence structure, and also includes reading, analyzing, rewriting, and transcribing various texts.
During the preparation of lexical lists relating to politics, economics, the social and cultural
life of today’s Russia, both within an international context and with regard to its historical background, the particular skills required by students specializing in interpretation will always be emphasized. The Language Lab is considered a fundamental part of the course.

- communicative method for lexical enrichment and language practice;

- exercises of text reformulation, expanding, compressing, paraphrasing;

- lectures;

- listening to different type of oral texts;

- presentation and comment on students' papers.

Assessment methods

The final grade is formed from two components:

Written test (0-30). The written test includes writing an essay on the topics covered by lectures. The topic will be assigned a few days before the oral exam.

The oral examination (0-30) involves the discussion of topics covered during the course.

A final mark is given based on the evaluation of the written test and the oral exam with the possible bonus (0-2) according to the work during the semester.
