Learning outcomes

Through this course, and upon completion of the final test, the student gains basic knowledge of mechanics of solids and static analysis of structures made of beams. These skills make the student able to solve basic problems related to the design or assessment of mechanical components.

Course contents

Recalls of rigid body equilibrium: forces, moments, and constraints.

External stresses on components: diagrams and maximum values.

Geometry of areas and masses: static and inertia moments.

Internal stresses in components: diagrams and maximum values.

Mechanical stiffness.

Mechanical properties of materials.

Prediction of fatigue life and fracture of components.

Teaching methods

The course syllabus is covered entirely during the lecture hours. Exercises are provided to guide the student in learning techniques for solving simple structures.

Assessment methods

The examination consists of a written test (mandatory), and an oral test (discretionary).
