Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students - know the evolution of media in the educational and didactic perspective; - know the new forms of digital permeating the cultural, educational and social fields; - know the perspective of capabilities applied to digital and media for a more effective educational and professional development; - know some of the processes of creation and realisation of media for educational and social purposes; in particular child e-lit, podcasts, video storytelling, digital community maps, video games and animated films; - they are able to analyse digital products from an educational perspective; - they are able to realise projects to use digital with different life ages and cultural and educational contexts; - they are able to evaluate the coherence and relevance of educational and didactic projects with digital; - they are able to conceive and design activities for the realisation of educational and cultural productions with digital; - they are able to reflect critically on digital and its different uses in life ages and contexts.

Course contents

The 48-hour course, delivered in pilot mode, includes 36 hours in the classroom and 12 in remote mode, and is divided into blocks


theoretical elements: where the theoretical constructs will be presented to frame the fundamental terms and concepts of the disciplinary field of ‘media education’;
what skills for media education: where the skills needed to design and manage interventions in the field of media education will be presented;
theoretical and practical insights related to different media realities: in particular, the world of social media, the media, and video games, comics, digital story telling will be explored;
designing media education interventions: where practical tools for designing educational interventions in the field of media education will be introduced;
presentation of practical tools for constructing media products: in this block, with a more practical approach, some digital tools for constructing media products useful for designing educational activities in the field of media education will be presented.

Teaching methods

The course will be developed through lectures, remote lectures, exercises (individual and/or group), discussions and comparisons on media materials and project work (individual and/or group).

The 48-hour course, delivered in pilot mode, includes 36 classroom hours and 12 remote hours.

Assessment methods

The examination, lasting 2 hours, will consist of a written test aimed at assessing:

  • comprehension of the examination texts and materials on the platform (‘short essay’ and ‘open questions’)
  • the ability to design a media education intervention (‘case study’ or ‘development of a project work’)

The assessment criteria will be:

  • relevance,
  • argumentative clarity
  • lexical appropriateness
  • completeness,
  • consistency of the project with the principles of media education

Teaching tools

  • Documents and official reports from Italian and European bodies;
  • Multimedia materials (text, video, images);
  • Exercises on the Virtual Platform;
  • Seminars with experts.
