from Oct 18, 2024 to Nov 19, 2024
Learning outcomes
Students will enhance their critical thinking, time- and group- management skills, and creativity by analysing existing materials, planning and creating new activities, and presenting their group works.
Course contents
The course will cover the main theoretical principles and teaching methods for teaching of Italian as a Second Language (L2) in multilingual primary school classes.
The course will focus on the structure of the teaching unit, the appropriate methodologies for its different phases, the main theories and approaches of plurilingual education (especially awakening to languages and translanguaging), and some plurilingual techniques and strategies to promote students' linguistic, cognitive, and emotional development. Texts such as short stories, picture books, and fairy tales will be used.
Readings/Bibliography
Bibliographical references will be provided throughout the course.
In each lesson, materials and slides prepared by the teacher will be made available to students. Further reading will be suggested during the lessons.
Teaching methods
The course will last 8 hours (two 4-hour lessons), and will be both theoretical and practical.
Each lesson will be divided into three parts: a short theoretical framework, the analysis of existing teaching materials, and the design of new activities by small groups of students based on similar inputs. Finally, students will present their group work and receive feedback.
The use of digital devices is highly encouraged. Students will be required to bring their own laptops to class.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation will be based on:
- course participation and cooperation during the lessons,
- a final paper (max. 2 pages) where students will be asked to reflect on the connections between the theoretical principles, the teaching methods, the group work, and the current legislation for Italian primary schools (MIUR, 2012).
Grading will be as follows:
+1 (very good)
0 (good)
-1 (sufficient)
rejected. In the case of rejection, the course must be repeated.
Teaching tools
The course will provide various resources: printed materials, multimedia presentations, digital resources, and texts.
