34606 - Numerical Methods for Energetics (Graduate Course)

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Moduli: Matteo Gherardi (Modulo 1) Filippo Capelli (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Energy Engineering (cod. 5978)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has knowledge of the techniques for numerical resolution and the computational tools of major importance in the field of energy engineering. The student will also be able to implement such numerical resolution techniques in MATLAB environment.

Course contents

  • Error propagation in numerical analysis.
  • Introduction to Matlab for the solving numerical problems.
  • Finite differences methods for approximating derivatives.
  • Numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations.
  • Numerical solution of non-homogeneous systems of linear equations with direct and iterative techniques.
  • Numerical solution of Fredholm-type integral equations of the second kind.
  • Iterative linearization techniques for the solution of systems of nonlinear equations.
  • Numerical resolution of definite integrals with Gaussian quadrature formulas.

Readings/Bibliography

Materials provided by the teacher. Use of interactive platforms (Teams, Virtuale) for the exchange of materials and their elaboration interacting with the teacher

Teaching methods

  • Lectures with overhead projector and slides
  • Practical exercises on Matlab
  • Asynchronous teaching (refer to Teaching tools)

The course participates in the University's teaching experimentation project

Assessment methods

Examination procedures: written exam.

Teaching tools

An archive of resources (Virtual/Panopto) is available to support students in learning activities and in preparing for the exam.

The archive includes:

  • teacher's notes;
  • flow-charts and Matlab codes relating to the exercises covered during the lessons;
  • recordings of lectures;
  • exercises to test your preparation.
