Learning outcomes

The course intends to reconstruct the historical-political evolution of Russia in the modern and contemporary age, in order to diachronically analyze continuity and discontinuity in its social, economic, cultural and identity developments also in relation to the role played by Russia in global dynamics, in particular as a key region of the Euro-Asian intersection. At the end of the course the student is able to identify the main phases of Russian history; is able to place the political, economic, cultural and social phenomena of the country within their historical context; is able to recognize and critically analyze sources and orient themselves in specialist bibliography.

Political parties in the Tsarist Empire in the pre-revolutionary age;

Political and national tensions;

Nicholas II, the reforms of Stolypin and the shadow of Rasputin;

The Revolutions: 1905, February and October 1917;

Lenin's political action;

From the Civil War to the NEP;

Stalin in power: the economy of pain;

Great-Terror vs. enthusiasm for the construction of socialism;

The international situation and the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pattor;

The Great Patriotic War;

The "Pobeda" and the Cold War;

From triumphant Stalinism to the Cold War

Teaching methods

Lectures, with the use of Power-Point, and use of multimedia supports (film clips and songs).

Oral exam.

The candidate will be invited to address a topic of his/her choice, to be developed exhaustively. The conversation will then focus on other topics related to the lessons.
