Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the causes and pathogenic mechanisms of human diseases, and the etiology of structures, functions, and control mechanisms alterations at several levels of integration. The students will learn the principles and biological basis of immune response regulation, including the pathophysiology of immune response impairment in major diseases.
Course contents
Module 1
MECHANISMS OF DISEASES
Cell injury and adaptation. Cell death. Stem cells
ENVIRONMENTAL AND NUTRITIONAL DISEASES Diseased caused by chemical or physical agents; nutritional disorders and obesity.
ONCOLOGY
The neoplastic cell; tumor classification; carcinogenesis; epidemiology and prevention; molecular genetics of cancer, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes; tumor progression; metastasis.
HEREDITARY DISEASES
Genetic diseases: autosomal dominant and recessive disorders, X-linked disorders, chromosomal disorders. Familial tumors. Multifactorial disorders (Alzheimer’s disease).
Module 2
Cellular pathology: the damage, DAMPS; PAMPS, MAMPS;
Inflammatory-reparative response: etiology and classification of acute inflammation, chemical mediators, vascular changes and exudate formation, cellular events and phagocytosis, systemic consequences and etiopathogenesis of fever; chronic and granulomatous inflammation, pathogenesis of tuberculosis; adult stem cells, reparative response: tissue repair and wound healing, fibrosis.
Immunology: cells and tissues of the immune system; innate and specific immunity; antigens; major histocompatibility complex; antigen processing and presentation; humoral and cell-mediated immune responses; antibody; complement; tolerance.
Immunopathology: Hypersensitivity Autoimmunity. Immunodeficiency syndrome. Graft rejection.
General physiopathology: hemostasis and hemorrhagic diseases; risk factors of atherosclerosis, formation of atheromatous plaque and related consequences; thrombosis; embolism. Diabetes.

Teaching methods
Lectures (36 hours).
Assessment methods
Student learning will be checked at the end of the course through a written test. The overall knowledge will be assessed using a written exam structured as multiple-choice questions. The exam will be held in presence using personal computers.
The exam is composed by 33 questions. Each valid answer grants 1 point. The student needs to reach 18 points to pass the exam. The number of correct answers corresponds to the final mark, if the number is greater or equal to 31 the mark will be 30 cum laude.
Students are required to know their Institutional credentials to sustain the exam.
