Learning outcomes

The students, at the end of the course, are able to aquire the main notions for interpreting the results of the main laboratory diagnostic tests related to blood and urin exam.

Course contents

Blood sampling. Tubes and color code. Counting of blood cells with automated white blood cell differential count. Diseases of red blood cells. Proteins of the serum and liver function. Tests for the diagnosis of hemostasis and thrombotic disorders. Urine examination (physical, chemical, sediment). Laboratory tests to evaluate kidney functionality. Cardiologic assays: hyperdislipidemies, C-reactive protein, glycemia, atrial natriuretic peptide.

Frontal lessons with use of powerpoint projections.

Assessment methods

Written examination.

The evaluation of the knowledge acquired by the student is based on the administration of a written questionnaire (paper or electronic) with multiple choice questions divided as follows: questionnaire A (30 questions on general pathology and immunology and general pharmacology), questionnaire B (30 questions of Clinical Pathology and Clinical Biochemistry). The student will be able to take the two questionnaires in the same exam session or in separate sessions, as long as they complete the exam within the current Academic Year.
