Learning outcomes

Basic notions on the organization of the environment of the intensive care ward; on the assistance to the patient with cardiac and respiratory arrest; on the patient with acute and chronic respiratory failure; on the patient with multiple trauma and on the criterions of sedation, admission and to the intensive care environment.

Course contents

  1. Intensive therapy mission and structural, technological and organizational requisites.
  2. Open Intensive care unit
  3. Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF): from the pathophysiology to the treatment in critical area; clinical characteristics of the patient with ARF; instruments and techniques for oxygen therapy. The mechanical ventilation
  4. the patient with cardio-respiratory arrest: guide lines for Basic Life Support (BLS).
  5. analgesia and sedation in critical Area; The delirium in a patient in the intensive care unit: from the evaluation to the treatment
  6. Hospital/Medical Disaster Management

i) Acquire knowledge on the general principles of M.d.C.

ii) The rescue chain

iii) The concept of “Noria”

iv) Triage (various types and methods)

v) Acquire skills in relating to other team members

vi) Relations with the media in the field

vii) Acquire management elements of collective emergency scenarios (1) The Hospital/Medical Disaster Management system (2) “Sustainable” protocols and procedures in mass emergency situations (3) Management elements of "unconventional" scenarios viii) Introduce the rescuer's philosophy within the M.d.C. (1) Define the concept of Catastrophe, (2) Know the fundamental principles of M.d.C. (3) Know the rescue chain.

The content of the lessons and other supportive material will be delivered to the students at the end of the course as printed slides.

Teaching methods

Interactive frontal lessons with PC projection of the didactic material and clinical case movies.
Particular attention will be given to the application Intensive care and emergencies outside the hospital settings

Assessment methods

The class is part of an integrated course. The examination at the end of this class aims to appraise the attainment of the didactic objectives exposed during the lessons according to the program of this particular class. The student will be questioned for verifying the attainment of the didactic objectives by the responsible of the class using a quiz of 30 questions with multiple answer choices, at the end of the cycle of the lessons. The final score is defined, at the end of the test, and expressed out of 30s (i.e. 18/30 the least – 30/30 cum laude the maximum score). This score will be integrated with those of the other classes of the Integrated Course's scores to establish the final result.
