Learning outcomes
The course is an introduction to qualitative methods in social sciences. Students will learn to choose a method fit for their research project and apply it.
Course contents
Lessons will focus on in-depth interviews and ethnography.
Readings/Bibliography
We will discuss research articles that use qualitative methods. These texts will be communicated and uploaded each week.
Teaching methods
The course has a hands-on approach. Students will choose a research topic, prepare a questionnaire, and conduct face-to-face interviews. We will discuss and analyze the outputs in class.
Assessment methods
Each student must conduct, transcribe and analyze four in-depth interviews. Each interview must be at least 25 minutes long. The analysis will discuss both the interviewer-interviewee interaction and substantial findings.
The mark will take into account:
- Length and depth of the interviews.
- Critical awareness in the use of the technique, as it appears from the broadness and precision of the analysis.
- Participation in class discussions.
