from May 07, 2025 to May 14, 2025
Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the essential elements for general theoretical and practical knowledge of the main primary and secondary diseases and syndromes involving, from a surgical point of view, the thoracopulmonary system with the aim of providing the synthetic elements for: - a correct methodological and notional approach; - a characterization of the pathogenesis; - the acquisition of clinical pictures and knowledge of prevention, differential diagnostics, clinical course, decision making and possible complications. At the end of the course the student will know the basic notions of the main pathologies of thoracopulmonary interest and the biochemical, instrumental and clinical investigations necessary for their diagnosis and outlines of surgical therapy. Thanks also to participation in scheduled internships and monothematic elective courses, at the end of the course the student has the theoretical-practical basis for recognizing the type of pathology by evaluating the symptoms, clinical signs, laboratory and instrumental tests.
Course contents
- Lung neoplasms: classification, pathological anatomy, clinic, diagnosis (invasive and non-invasive tests), TNM staging, definition of grade and stage and their value in determining the prognosis and surgical indications, principles of surgical therapy.
- Syndromes of occupation of the pleural cavity: pneumothorax, hemothorax, pleural effusion, pleural empyema, chylothorax.
- Pathology of the mediastinum: thymomas and mediastinal masses.
- Chest traumatology: open and closed trauma.

Teaching methods
During the lessons the main thoracic pathologies of surgical interest will be discussed. The course will be accompanied by the possibility of attending the department, the outpatient clinics and the operating room, compatibly with the accommodation capacities of the aforementioned structures.
Assessment methods
The assessment test is oral and will contain a series of questions aimed at ascertaining the student's theoretical knowledge of the program topics. The inevitable reference is to the notions that the student himself must have acquired in previous academic years regarding anatomy, physiology, general pathology and oncology, which were largely brought to attention during the lectures.
They are therefore fundamental, as an integral part of the course, for passing the exam.
The teachers responsible for the courses participate in an overall collegial evaluation of the student's performance. The evaluation is expressed with a mark out of thirty.
- The oral test is passed with a grade of at least 18/30.
- In the case of a maximum mark (30/30), honors may be awarded.
- The credits for the Integrated Course in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases (10 CFU) are acquired upon passing the final assessment.
If it is necessary to appoint multiple subcommissions at the same time for the same final assessment, the student has the right to request, in advance, no later than the start of the exam, to also be examined by the teacher responsible for the discipline. Passing the exam will be guaranteed to students who demonstrate mastery of the key concepts illustrated in the teaching. Failure to pass the exam may be due to insufficient knowledge of these concepts.
