98943 - Fundamentals of Mathematics

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Economics, Markets and Institutions (cod. 8038)

Learning outcomes

The course aims at developing the basic mathematical tools necessary for the study of economics, statistics and finance. By completion of the course students are assumed to have gained insight into the basic theory of number sets, matrix algebras and vector spaces. They should be able to solve linear systems of equations, apply matrix diagonalization methods and classify quadratic forms.

Course contents

Functions domain and image, composition, injectivity surjectivity, invetibility.

Linear algebra: vectors and matrices, determinant of a matrix, rank of a matrix; linear systems: Cramer theorem, Rouchè-Capelli theorem, linear systems depending on a parameter. Linear functions, changes of basis. Operators and diagonalization. eigenvalues, eigenvectors, quadratic forma, inner products. spectral theorem.
