Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has acquired a critical knowledge of material production and cultural meaning by which media create geographical facts and imaginative geographies, producing social relationships and space.

BORDER AESTHETICS

(In-)visibility, (in-)audibility and (dis-)appearances at the borders of Europe

The course sets out to rethink contemporary borders as aesthetic objects, which operate by producing peculiar conditions of (in-)visibility, (in-)audibility and (dis-)appearance. By engaging with maps as well as audio/video materials of various kinds, and by unpacking a series of key conceptual tools (partition of the sensible, border spectacle -and voyeurism-, disobedient gaze, right to opacity, sousveillance, and counter-cartographies, amongst others), we will investigate how surveillance practices and struggles for mobilities ad the edges of Europe rely on the production and concealing of images, sounds and bodies, with a particular focus on the central Mediterranean.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be accompanied by screenings of various audio-visual materials, as well as seminar discussions with the whole class or in divided in groups. The objective is to foster a more direct interaction between teacher and students, stimulating debate and peer-to-peer learning.
